Edo deputy gov’s office moved out of Govt House

The Edo State Government has relocated the office of the deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, to a building outside the Government House in Benin, the state capital.

It was gathered that the new office is situated at no 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, close to the government house.

A signboard with the inscription, ‘Office of the Deputy Governor’, is erected at the entrance of the building.

The deputy governor’s office used to be the state Public Procurement Office commissioned by a former governor of the state, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, on December 16, 2014.

Speaking, one of the workers renovating the building disclosed that they were directed to complete the renovation on Monday, September 4, 2023.

The worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he did not know what the building was going to be used for, adding that he had not seen the signboard placed at the entrance.

Also speaking on the development, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, said: “If there is a government sign board saying so, then it must be so.”

Shaibu has been in a frosty relationship with Governor Godwin Obaseki over his governorship ambition ahead of the 2024 election in the state.

The Star had reported that the deputy governor recently walked out of an event organised by the Edo State Government after his aides were denied entry.

Shaibu was allowed into the venue of the event but his aides, including security operatives, were stopped from gaining access.

The embattled deputy governor, who was visibly angry over the incident, later led his aides out of the venue and drove away.

This came after security details attached to Obaseki stopped Shaibu from accessing the governor at a church service to mark the 32nd anniversary of the creation of Edo State on Sunday, August 27.

The governor later stated that the security operatives were doing their job of safeguarding him.
