EFCC probes 2 men over $899,800 fake dollars in Kano

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation following the arrest of two men allegedly found in possession of $899,800 in counterfeit U.S. currency.

According to a statement posted on the EFCC’s official X account on Saturday, the suspects were apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along Maiduguri Road in the Wudil area of Kano State.

The suspects, identified as Abubakar Hussaini and Sahabi Adamu, were reportedly traveling in a commercial Golf 3 vehicle en route to Kila village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

During a routine search, NDLEA operatives discovered the fake currency hidden inside a carton of Maggi Star seasoning.

The suspects, along with the counterfeit money, were handed over to the EFCC for further investigation.

Preliminary investigations by the EFCC revealed that the men were headed to meet a certain Muhammad Walo, who was to introduce them to one Mallam Mashiru—a self-proclaimed spiritualist.

Mashiru allegedly claimed he could convert counterfeit dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers.

The EFCC confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be formally charged in court upon the completion of the investigation.
