Egbetokun resigns as IGP, Tunji Disu set to take over

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has resigns from office following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.

It was gathered that the directive was conveyed to Egbetokun during a meeting with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, February 23, 2026.

He is expected to be replaced by Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG).

Although an official announcement is yet to be made, sources disclosed that preparations are already underway for a formal handover.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency and the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement confirming his removal.

However, a source said a formal announcement would be made later on Tuesday.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023, with his substantive appointment confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

He was originally due to retire on September 4, 2024, after attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, the National Assembly amended the police law, allowing an Inspector-General of Police to serve a fixed four-year term unless removed by the president.

Following the amendment, Egbetokun was projected to remain in office until October 31, 2027, a decision that generated public debate and criticism across the country.

The Presidency had repeatedly maintained that his continued stay in office was lawful under the amended Police Act.
