How to buy fuel, serve yourself at NNPC stations

Motorists can now buy and dispense petrol themselves at selected NNPC Retail stations using a mobile application as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited begins rolling out its self-service fuel system.

The initiative is part of NNPC’s plan to establish between 50 and 70 smart, self-service stations nationwide within the next six months.

Under the new system, customers no longer have to wait for an attendant to dispense their fuel. They can select the quantity they want, pay through the NRL Fuel App and use a digital code to activate the pump.

NNPC Retail explained the process in a guide shared on its X account on Friday.

Here is how motorists can use the self-service facility:

Download the app

Customers are required to download the NRL Fuel App through the link provided by NNPC Retail.

Select fuel purchase

Open the application, select Fuel Purchase and choose the type of fuel required.

Choose a participating station

The app displays available NNPC Retail stations. Customers should select a station offering the self-service option, identified by a green Self-Serve badge.

The service is currently limited to selected stations as NNPC expands the rollout.

Enter the amount and pay

After selecting the station, enter the amount to be spent on petrol. The app will display the corresponding quantity and price.

Customers can then review the transaction and select Pay from Wallet to complete the purchase.

Get the self-service code

Once payment is successful, the app generates a digital receipt containing the customer’s Order ID, Self-Service Code and QR Code.

Activate the pump

At the fuel pump, enter the eight-digit Self-Service Code on the terminal and press the hash (#) key.

Once the code is validated, the customer can pick up the nozzle and dispense the quantity of fuel already paid for.

NNPC Executive Vice-President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the initiative formed part of the company’s broader plan to transform conventional filling stations into integrated energy and mobility centres.

Speaking at the commissioning of a smart station on Bill Clinton Drive, Airport Road, Abuja, NNPC Retail Executive Director, Retail Operations and Mobility, Shettima Baba-Kukawa, said customers would be able to complete their transactions digitally and dispense the exact quantity purchased.

The company said the smart stations would go beyond petrol sales by incorporating services such as electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas facilities, among other mobility services.

NNPC said the self-service model is expected to provide motorists with greater convenience while supporting the ongoing digital transformation of its retail operations.
