El-Rufai writes Ribadu over importation of poisonous chemical from Poland

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has written to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, requesting clarification over reports that the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) procured thallium sulphate, a highly toxic chemical substance.

In a letter titled “Request for Clarification on the Procurement of Thallium Sulphate,” El-Rufai said he was acting as a concerned citizen and asked for details about the alleged importation of about 10 kilograms of the substance from a supplier in Poland.

He raised questions about the purpose of the procurement, the identity of the supplier, the quantity and concentration of the material, and whether appropriate permits were obtained. He also sought information on storage arrangements, regulatory oversight, and any public-health risk assessments or safety plans tied to the chemical.

According to him, the inquiry was made in good faith to ensure due process, transparency, and public safety, noting that public confidence in government institutions depends on accountability.

The letter comes amid rising tensions between El-Rufai and the current administration. During an interview on ARISE Television, the former governor alleged that Ribadu orchestrated an attempt to have him arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

El-Rufai also claimed that information about the alleged move was obtained through a tapped phone call, accusing security agencies of routinely monitoring calls without court orders.

He has repeatedly accused the government of targeting him politically and said he would honour an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday over a separate matter.

Neither the Office of the National Security Adviser nor Ribadu had publicly responded to the claims at the time of filing this report.
