EPL: Manchester United stun Arsenal at Emirates to go fourth

Manchester United climbed into fourth place in the Premier League after edging leaders Arsenal in a thrilling encounter at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Arsenal took the lead through an own goal by United defender Lisandro Martinez before Bryan Mbeumo equalised for the Red Devils.

Arsenal struggled to regain their composure after Mbeumo’s leveller and United, 2-0 winners over Manchester City in Michael Carrick’s first game in charge last weekend, went in front when Patrick Dorgu crashed a superb effort in off the bar.

Mikel Merino later hauled the Gunners level from a Bukayo Saka corner, before Matheus Cunha scored a sensational 87th-minute winner to clinch a 3-2 victory for United and leave leaders Arsenal, losing at home for the first time this season, stunned at the Emirates Stadium.

The victory continues a dream start in the dugout for head coach Carrick, and leaves alarm bells ringing for Arsenal, whose lead at the top of the Premier League is reduced from seven to four points following a three-game winless run.

Earlier, Aston Villa beat Newcastle to close within four points of Arsenal.

Villa’s impressive 2-0 victory at Newcastle took Unai Emery’s men level on points with Manchester City, whose own title chances were boosted by events at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea also piled more pain on Crystal Palace with a 3-1 win at Selhurst Park.

Nottingham Forest gave their survival chances a huge boost by inflicting just the second home defeat of the season on Brentford.

Forest moved five points clear of the drop zone with a 2-0 win in west London thanks to goals from Igor Jesus and Taiwo Awoniyi.
