President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, October 12, 2023, approved the appointment of Ola Olukoyede as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for a renewable term of four years in the first instance, pending Senate confirmation.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, who announced Olukoyede’s appointment via a statement, noted that it followed the resignation of the suspended Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Bawa was earlier suspended by President Tinubu for alleged weighty allegations against him (Bawa).

Below are a few things to know about Olukoyede:

  • Ola Olukoyede was born on October 14, 1969.
  • He is a native of Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
  • He attended Lagos State University (LASU); University of Lagos (UNILAG); Institute of Arbitration, France; and the Kennedy School of Executive Education, University of Harvard, United States.
  • Olukoyede is a Pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), City of Refuge, Lagos Province 12, Shasha, Lagos State.
  • Olukoyede is a lawyer with over 22 years of experience as a regulatory compliance consultant and specialist in fraud management and corporate intelligence.
  • He was a member of the Fraud Advisory Panel in the United Kingdom.
  • He worked at the law firm of the immediate past Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, before joining the EFCC.
  • Olukoyede served as the Chief of Staff to the former EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, between 2016 and 2018.
  • He also served as the Secretary of the EFCC between 2018 and 2023.
  • He is a member of the Federal Government Technical Committee on the Repositioning of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
  • Olukoyede is the first southerner to head EFCC since the creation of the anti-graft agency.
