Olayemi Michael Cardoso was on Friday, September 15, 2023, appointed as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Bola Tinubu.

This followed the sack of the management team of the CBN by Tinubu.

Cardoso’s appointment is for a term of five years at the first instance, pending his confirmation by the Senate.

Below are a few things to know about the acting CBN Governor:

Cardoso is a Nigerian banker, chartered stockbroker, and public policy maker.

Cardoso earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in managerial and administrative studies from Aston University in the United Kingdom.

Cardoso also has a Master’s degree in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School.

He started his banking career with Citibank, eventually rising to Vice President.

He co-founded Citizens International Bank, where he served as an Executive Director for eight years.

He has served as a board member of MRS Oil and was the chairman of the board of EFinA.

Cardoso is a member of the advisory board of Lagos Business School and chairman of the board of African Venture Philanthropy Alliance.

Cardoso was appointed in 1999 as the first Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget for Lagos State under the administration of the then-governor, President Bola Tinubu.

He is the founding chairman and co-chair of Ehingbeti Summit, the Lagos State economic summit.

He is also a former executive lead at Harvard Kennedy School alumni association.

Cardiso was on September 15, 2023, nominated as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor for an initial term of five years, pending confirmation by the Senate.
