FG begins N50,000 monthly payments to vulnerable Nigerians

The Federal Government has commenced a monthly N50,000 cash support programme for vulnerable households to cushion the impact of rising living costs.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, announced the initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Doro said the presidential intervention was designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of vulnerable Nigerians facing rising food prices and the increasing cost of essential goods.

“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” he said.

The minister explained that the programme would be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustment.

He said the ministry was working with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure and transparent payment of the funds.

According to him, beneficiaries would receive text messages from the providers seeking their consent before payments are made directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

Doro clarified that Nigerians were not required to apply, pay any fee or register through agents to benefit from the programme.

He warned against fraudsters and advised beneficiaries not to disclose their personal identification numbers or Bank Verification Numbers to anyone.

The minister urged Nigerians who receive suspicious messages or requests for money to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.

He said the intervention would complement existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes by strengthening household resilience and economic stability.

Doro added that the initiative was part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assuring that the ministry would implement it with transparency and accountability.
