FG denies signing agreement with ASUU

The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting it had signed a new agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, clarified the development while addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, contrary to media reports, the government only held an expanded meeting with relevant stakeholders to review the contents of a draft agreement.

“I read some reports in the media on Thursday indicating that we had a meeting with ASUU.

“That was not correct. Rather, we met with stakeholders to review the draft agreement,” Alausa said.

He further disclosed that a committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, has been constituted to scrutinize ASUU’s demands and draft a counter-proposal.

The committee’s recommendations, he added, will be forwarded to the Yayale Ahmed-led negotiation team before being presented to the union.

The minister stressed that no formal agreement has been signed with ASUU.

“For clarity, the government has never signed any agreement with ASUU over the years.

“What exists is only a draft document,” Alausa stated.
