FG diverts traffic on Lagos–Ibadan expressway over Kara bridge repairs

The Federal Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to allow for the replacement of damaged expansion joints on Kara Bridge, outbound Lagos.

In a travel advisory issued on Saturday, the Federal Ministry of Works said the maintenance work will begin on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, and is expected to last about two weeks, ending on March 24, 2026.

The statement, signed by the Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Olayiwola Komolafe, said motorists should prepare for partial disruption and make use of alternative routes during the repair period.

According to the ministry, drivers travelling from Ikorodu to Mowe, Sagamu and Ibadan are advised to pass through Shimawa or Mosinmi. Motorists heading from Lagos Island can also use the Epe corridor through Ijebu Ode to reach Sagamu, Ibadan or Mowe.

The ministry urged road users to plan their trips ahead and comply with traffic management instructions around the construction area.

It cautioned motorists that shorter routes may not necessarily translate to faster travel during the diversion period.

“The Federal Ministry of Works regrets any inconvenience this temporary partial closure may cause and appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the motoring public as the Ministry continues its efforts to ensure the safety, durability and stability of the nation’s road infrastructure,” the statement said.

Earlier in February, the ministry announced a six-week partial closure along sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to carry out urgent rehabilitation of expansion joints on Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge and the Arepo–Punch Bridge.

The repairs followed the resumption of critical works that had earlier been suspended on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge after motorists complained of prolonged traffic congestion.

Komolafe apologised to road users for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing repairs, assuring that improved traffic management measures would be implemented to ensure the work is completed quickly and effectively.

He added that the expansion joints on the affected bridges had deteriorated significantly, posing safety risks and contributing to road crashes along the busy highway.
