FG, Mutfwang seal deal to push Plateau as Nigeria’s global tourism hub

Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Minister of Tourism Hannatu Musa Musawa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly project Plateau State as Nigeria’s premier tourism destination on the global stage.

The agreement, sealed in Abuja between the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy and the Plateau State Government, targets the remodelling of iconic tourism sites and the revival of long-neglected infrastructure across the state.

Musawa, who has championed the Federal Government’s tourism reset agenda, said any serious conversation about tourism in Nigeria begins and ends with Plateau, framing the sector not only as an economic lever but as a tool for social stability.

“Wherever you go around the world, when people speak about the beauty of Nigeria, they speak about Plateau,” she said, positioning the state as the country’s most marketable tourism asset and arguing that job creation within the tourism ecosystem could help curb insecurity.

For Mutfwang, the ambition stretches beyond attracting visitors. The governor is pushing to transform Plateau into an international tourism hub powered by its natural landscapes, temperate climate, cultural richness, and evolving creative economy.

Central to that strategy is the expansion of signature events, including the Plateau Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival, which is being positioned for international recognition ahead of its 2026 edition.

The administration is also pursuing a “Welcome to Plateau” diaspora initiative designed to attract global investors and reconnect Nigerians abroad with the state through a planned diaspora city.

On security, Mutfwang acknowledged past challenges but said his administration is deploying technology-driven solutions to improve safety, pointing to recent successful large-scale events and a growing nightlife as evidence that public confidence is returning.
