The Federal Government has restated its commitment to completing the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano expressway within the next 14 months, describing it as a legacy project that will serve generations to come.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, gave the assurance during a site inspection on Saturday, noting that Sections 1 and 3 of the project, covering 118km, were awarded for ₦252 billion, with President Bola Tinubu approving 30% upfront payment of about ₦60 billion.
Section 2, spanning 72km with both asphalt and reinforced concrete lanes, is valued at ₦507 billion, of which over ₦150 billion has already been disbursed.
“When combined, the total cost up to Kano stands at about ₦761 billion.
“The President has made this a funding priority under the ‘Rebuilding Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Road’ initiative,” Umahi said, stressing that the project is designed to last for more than 100 years.
He urged contractors to deliver quality work within deadline, warning that his integrity was at stake if the project lingers.
The Minister also revealed Tinubu’s directive that road standards in the South-West, with full facilities, must be replicated in the North.
Umahi further emphasized closer monitoring and evaluation, insisting that site inspections remain key to ensuring success.
Minister of State for Works, Alhaji Garba Umar Goronyo, commended contractors for progress made despite rain-induced delays but urged them to intensify efforts, noting that Nigerians are eager to see the road completed.
