The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Rev. Fr. Matthew Eya, Parish Priest of St. Charles Parish, Eha Ndiagu, who was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Friday night.
The incident occurred at about 9:10 p.m. during heavy rainfall, when assailants on a motorcycle attacked the cleric.
Police operatives who arrived at the scene found his ash-coloured Toyota Camry (2008 model) riddled with bullets and vandalised.
The attackers also appeared to have thoroughly searched the vehicle.
According to police, twelve spent shells of 7.62×39mm ammunition were recovered at the scene. Fr. Eya’s body was rushed to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has taken over the case, while police say efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
