Fire razes Jabi wood market in Abuja

A major fire erupted in the early hours of Wednesday, December 3, 2025, destroying large sections of the popular Jabi Wood Market in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The incident led to the loss of numerous shops and property valued in the millions.

Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze broke out at dawn, releasing thick plumes of smoke as traders and nearby residents scrambled to rescue goods from the burning structures.

Firefighters from both the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service responded promptly to emergency calls and worked intensively to contain the inferno.

According to an official of the FCT Fire Service, no casualties had been recorded at the time of reporting.

He added that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Traders affected by the incident expressed deep frustration over the destruction of equipment, building materials, and finished wood products.

They appealed to the government for immediate support to help them rebuild their businesses.

Authorities have assured that a comprehensive assessment of the damage will be carried out and urged market operators to strictly follow fire safety protocols to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
