No fewer than five people lost their lives in fire-related and other emergency incidents across Kano State in June, the Kano State Fire Service has disclosed.
The agency said it responded to 30 fire outbreaks and seven rescue operations during the month, while one emergency call turned out to be a false alarm.
The figures were contained in the service’s monthly operational report released in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.
According to the report, firefighters also rescued three people from separate emergency situations across the state.
The agency estimated that fire incidents destroyed property valued at about ₦120.45 million, while prompt intervention by its personnel saved assets worth approximately ₦481.8 million.
Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to observe basic fire safety measures by ensuring that naked flames and other sources of ignition are properly extinguished after use.
He also advised parents and guardians to keep children away from rivers, ponds, uncovered wells and other open water bodies to prevent drowning incidents, especially during the rainy season.
