No fewer than seven communities have been submerged by flood in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
The communities were submerged by flood over the ongoing construction on the Zungeru hydro electric dam in the state.
The District Head of Gurumana in Shiroro Local Government, Malam Aliyu Umaru, stated this during a visit by the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, to the Gwada Internally Displaced Persons camp in the local government.
The district explained that the affected communities include Gurumana, Palei, Nmachi, Npani, Zangoro, Masuku as well as Magani.
According to him, most of the affected persons from the communities are currently seeking shelter in Kuta and Gwada IDP camps of the council.

While calling on the state government to come to their aid, Umar urged the Federal government to pay compensation to the affected communities.
Responding, Governor Bello decried the situation of IDPs at the camps, adding that efforts were ongoing to restore normalcy in communities affected by bandit activities.
“We will work with the Federal Ministry of Works to ensure the immediate release of fund for payment of compensation to the communities and ensure they are relocated to better areas,” the governor said.
He further reassured that the state government would continue to give all necessary support to security personnel in the state to effectively fight against banditry.
