Mali’s former Prime Minister, Choguel Maïga, is under formal investigation over allegations of embezzling public funds during his tenure.
The Office of the Auditor General has submitted findings to the judiciary, highlighting serious financial irregularities linked to Maïga’s administration. Judicial sources confirm that the case—now being referred to as the “Choguel Maïga Files”—is currently under review by the Attorney General of the Supreme Court.
According to RFI, the investigation focuses on two main areas: questionable expenses tied to the inauguration of a public infrastructure project, and allegedly unjustified mission-related payments. Central to the probe is the suspected misuse of nearly 2 billion CFA francs (about $3.3 million USD) by the Prime Minister’s Office.
A source close to the investigation stated that “no one is above the law,” stressing the judiciary’s determination to ensure accountability.
However, Maïga’s allies have described the probe as politically motivated. A former aide said the ex-premier “is not afraid” and is ready to cooperate with the authorities. Others believe the investigation is a response to Maïga’s vocal criticism of Mali’s military-led government.
“He has files of his own,” one associate warned, suggesting the former prime minister may retaliate with revelations of his own.
