Former UBA Chairman, Israel Ogbue, dies at 99

The Board, Management and Staff of United Bank for Africa Plc have announced the passing of former Chairman, Israel C. Ogbue, who died peacefully at the age of 99.

Chief Ogbue, widely regarded as a respected boardroom statesman and administrator, devoted more than six decades to service across Nigeria’s public and private sectors. His career was marked by a reputation for integrity, discipline and strong institutional leadership.

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Ogbue began his professional career in the Federal Civil Service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies.

He later built an accomplished career at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), rising through senior management ranks and serving with distinction until his retirement in 1988. His governance expertise subsequently led to appointments on the boards of several major institutions, including UBA.

Ogbue joined the UBA Board in 2005 as a Non-Executive Director and was appointed Chairman in 2011. He served in that role until his retirement in 2013, providing steady leadership during a pivotal phase of the bank’s transformation and strengthening its focus on corporate governance, accountability and long-term sustainability.

Beyond his corporate achievements, he was known as a devoted family patriarch and mentor. He was the father of Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu.

Described as humble and deeply faithful, Chief Ogbue often credited his longevity to God’s grace and encouraged younger generations to balance ambition with moderation, remain resilient in adversity and maintain strong faith.

UBA Group extended condolences to his family, friends and associates, noting that his life embodied service, wisdom and lasting impact on Nigeria’s corporate landscape.

Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
