Four drown in blocked waterway in Kano

The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of four young men who drowned in a blocked waterway at Zangon Kaya, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area.

According to a statement released on Friday by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, the incident occurred in the afternoon after the victims entered a flooded drain reportedly obstructed due to ongoing railway construction in the area.

“We received a distress call around 1:48 p.m. from one Rabiu Yusif, reporting that four individuals had fallen into a blocked water channel filled with water,” Abdullahi stated.

He explained that two of the victims initially entered the waterway to swim but became trapped. A third person attempted to rescue them and also got stuck, followed by a fourth who suffered the same fate.

Upon arrival, the rescue team, in collaboration with local residents, was able to retrieve all four individuals. However, they were found unconscious and later confirmed dead.

The deceased were identified as Bashir Sani (28), Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Usman Ubale (26), and Yakubu Muhammed (22). Their remains were handed over to the Dawanau Police Division.

Abdullahi attributed the tragic incident to “local swimming in a blocked sewer,” and urged residents to avoid such unsafe practices, especially during the rainy season.
