Fubara, deputy’s impeachment not suspended ― Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has dismissed reports claiming that impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, have been halted.

The Assembly clarified that the impeachment process remains ongoing following the formal commencement of proceedings on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Lawmakers had initiated the process after the Leader of the House, Major Jack, presented allegations of gross misconduct against the governor, backed by the signatures of 26 members.

Addressing claims that the process had been suspended, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, described the reports as misleading and untrue.

George, in a statement on Friday, explained that official notices of gross misconduct had already been served on both Fubara and Odu, addin that the Assembly is currently awaiting their responses in line with constitutional provisions.

George insisted that there has been no suspension or discontinuation of the impeachment exercise, accusing certain individuals and media platforms of deliberately spreading false information to mislead the public and create tension.

He urged Nigerians to ignore what he termed “false narratives,” stressing that the lawmakers remain focused on carrying out their constitutional responsibilities.

“I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed. We remain committed to our constitutional duties and will not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not have our country’s nascent democracy at heart,” he noted.

The lawmaker reaffirmed the House’s commitment to due process, noting that the impeachment proceedings would continue in accordance with the law despite efforts to discredit the Assembly.
