Fubara: No constitutional provisions for LG chairmen’s tenure extension
Also sworn in by the governor include Evans Bipi (Ogu/Bolo LGA), Princess Ogan (Okrika LGA), Promise Reginald (Omuma LGA), Enyiada Cookey-Gam (Opobo/Nkoro LGA), Ogogo Philip (Oyigbo LGA), Ichemati Ezebunwo (Port Harcourt LGA), and Matthew Dike (Tai LGA).
Fubara had, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 18, directed heads of administration in the 23 Local Government Areas of the state to take over from the elected council chairmen whose three-year tenure elapsed on Monday.
21 of the 23 outgone chairmen insisted they would not hand over, leading to some heated moments in the state.
Police operatives later took over all the local government secretariats and some critical government infrastructure in Rivers State.
The police said the action was to forestall further bloodbath as well as a breakdown of law and order due to the spread of the crisis over the tenure of the outgoing local government chairmen.
