FULL LIST: US terminates TPS for 12 countries

The United States government has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of 12 countries, including four African nations, as the Donald Trump administration continues its review of the humanitarian immigration programme.

The affected African countries are Somalia, South Sudan, Cameroon and Ethiopia, while the other countries on the list are Haiti, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Nepal, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

According to updates by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Somalia’s TPS designation ended on August 14, 2026, while South Sudan’s termination took effect on August 7.

The decisions followed reviews of conditions in the affected countries by the US Department of Homeland Security.

TPS is a temporary humanitarian protection granted to eligible nationals of designated countries already living in the US when armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary circumstances make their return unsafe.

Beneficiaries are generally protected from deportation and may obtain employment authorisation and, in some circumstances, travel authorisation during the period of protection.

However, TPS does not provide permanent residency or automatically confer another immigration status. The termination also does not mean every affected beneficiary will immediately be deported, as some may have other lawful immigration status or qualify for separate forms of protection.

The status of some countries on the list remains affected by ongoing court proceedings.

USCIS said Ethiopia’s TPS termination was stayed by a federal judge in Massachusetts in January 2026 while the government considered its next steps.

Legal proceedings have also affected the implementation of TPS terminations involving Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua.

The latest decisions are part of the Trump administration’s broader review and rollback of TPS designations for foreign nationals living in the United States.
