Garo sworn in as Kano dep gov

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Tuesday swore in Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State at a ceremony held at the Coronation Hall of Government House, Kano.

The oath of office was administered at 11:00 a.m. before an audience of top government officials, traditional rulers, political stakeholders, party loyalists, and members of the public, whom the governor had invited to what he described as a historic occasion.

Garo’s appointment fills a vacancy created when former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo resigned following Governor Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress. Gwarzo had chosen to remain aligned with NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso, Yusuf’s former political godfather, after the split.

The Kano State House of Assembly confirmed Garo’s nomination on Monday following a screening exercise in which an ad hoc committee reviewed his credentials and recommended his confirmation.

Garo, a former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs in Kano State, is expected to work closely with the governor to advance the administration’s development agenda across the state.

The swearing-in completes the constitutional process of filling the deputy governorship seat and is seen by political observers as a step towards consolidating stability within the Yusuf administration following months of political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
