GOCOP unveils book, vows to promote ethical online journalism

The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has reaffirmed its commitment to cleaning up the online media space and setting industry standards with the launch of its first book and a fundraising drive for its Media Centre in Abuja.

Speaking at the dual event, GOCOP President Ms. Maureen Chigbo emphasized that the Guild’s mission is to promote responsible and professional journalism in the digital space.

The new publication, “Nigeria Media Renaissance: GOCOP Perspectives on Online Publishing,” outlines the Guild’s vision for a reformed and ethical online media environment.

Chigbo called for greater collaboration with stakeholders, media professionals, government agencies, advertisers, and civil society to achieve this vision.

She noted that GOCOP, made up of experienced journalists with over two decades in mainstream media, is championing ethical standards through self-regulation and accountability mechanisms.

To ensure compliance with professional ethics, GOCOP has established several oversight bodies, including a Disciplinary Committee and an Ombudsman, to handle public complaints and enforce best practices among members.

“We take our responsibility seriously and are committed to eliminating unprofessional conduct from the online media space,” Chigbo said.

She acknowledged the support of contributors to the book, including Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi, publisher of PREMIUM TIMES, who wrote the foreword, and Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), who served as the book reviewer.

Chigbo also thanked the Federal and state governments, institutions, and corporate bodies for their continued support.

She appealed for further donations to strengthen GOCOP’s activities and support the completion of the GOCOP Media Centre, which will help members manage their platforms more sustainably.

In her closing remarks, Chigbo urged public relations professionals, advertisers, government agencies, and NGOs to partner with GOCOP and recognize the essential role of ethical online journalism in fostering justice, peace, and human rights.

Through its ongoing efforts, GOCOP seeks to be a leading voice in shaping the future of Nigeria’s online media industry.
