The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total and indefinite strike, giving the state government and university management until October 2026 to fulfil agreements reached with the union.
The decision was contained in a resolution issued after the union’s congress meeting on Friday, August 21, 2026, and signed by the branch Chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.
The union said the congress considered a letter from the Gombe State Government on the implementation of a new salary structure for academic staff, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding with the university management on the payment of outstanding arrears and other entitlements owed its members.
Following deliberations, the congress agreed to suspend the planned industrial action to allow the government and university management time to implement their commitments.
The union said the suspension was intended to give both parties the “benefit of doubt” until the end of October.
“The Congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026,” the resolution stated.
ASUU, however, warned that the suspension was conditional and that it would revive the planned strike if the agreements were not implemented within the stipulated period.
“The Congress also resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action in the event of a failure to implement the content of the documents,” the union added.
The development temporarily averts a disruption of academic activities at the university as ASUU awaits concrete action from the government and management on the outstanding issues.
