Gov Idris orders Kebbi Chief Judge to decongest prisons

Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has directed the Acting Chief Judge of the state, Justice Umar Abubakar, to decongest correctional centres across the state.

Idris gave the order while swearing in the Grand Khadi, Khadi Sadiq Umar-Muktar, at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital, on Saturday, July 29, 2023.

The swearing-in followed the retirement of his predecessor, Khadi Tukur Sani-Argungu, who recently clocked 60 years.

The governor, according to the statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, said the directive became necessary in view of serries of complaints about prison congestion being experienced across the state.

Idris, who tasked the newly sworn-in Grand Khadi on justice, equity, and fairness to all manner of people, also informed him that his choice was based on track records and urged him to sustain the tempo for the good of his staff and the state at large.

Governor Idris assured that his administration would do everything possible within the meagre resources to make the judicial workers happy.

While promising to operate an open door policy, the governor said his government was ready to welcome advice, suggestions and constructive criticism that would bring positive development to the state, “so that we adjust as leaders”.

He added: “Going by my background, all of you knew that I am a teacher, a unionist to the core and a labour leader who grew from Local Government to State Chairman to President of the largest trade union in Africa.

“In spite of that, I have never left you people, wherever I am, I have never spent two weeks without coming back home. I want other people that have the interest of Kebbi to emulate this attitude.”

He said the yearnings and aspirations of Kebbi people was to see change, adding that the work started by his administration testified to the fact that resident of Kebbi would have a cause to smile soon.

The governor further assured that his ambition was to transform the state capital from “a glorified local government headquarters to a full-fledged state capital.”
