Group backs senator Buba’s peace efforts in Northern Nigeria

The Bauchi State Muslim Parliament has thrown its weight behind the peace-building initiatives of Senator Shehu Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security and National Intelligence.

Speaking at a press conference in Bauchi on Saturday, the group declared its “total support” for the senator’s use of dialogue as a tool for resolving conflicts, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

Chairman of the Parliament, Ahmad Yusuf, praised Senator Buba, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District, for his commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and national security.

He said the senator’s approach aligns with the Parliament’s core vision of fostering unity and peaceful coexistence.

Yusuf highlighted Buba’s initiatives aimed at easing tensions between farming communities and pastoralists, noting that his model — which combines dialogue with economic empowerment — mirrors successful peace strategies earlier adopted in the Niger Delta.

Another member of the Parliament, Hamza Abubakar, stressed that years of armed campaigns against insecurity, especially Boko Haram, have not yielded lasting peace.

He cited examples from Kaduna, where dialogue has fostered relative calm, and urged that the same method be expanded to other troubled regions.

The Muslim Parliament condemned what it described as a “vicious smear campaign” against Senator Buba, describing the attacks as character assassination intended to undermine his contributions to national security.

It also called on stakeholders to support dialogue-driven solutions and urged government authorities to address the grievances of victims of conflict.

The organisation appealed to Nigerians to embrace peace and cautioned politicians against exploiting national security for political gain.

Senator Buba has gained recognition for advocating non-kinetic approaches to complement military operations in the fight against insecurity.

His strategy emphasises dialogue, reconciliation, and socio-economic renewal — principles rooted in his academic background in Peace Studies and Conflict Management.

He is currently pursuing a PhD on the drivers of banditry in Zamfara and Kaduna States.
