The Coalition of Christians Groups for Good Governance Nigeria and Diaspora (COCGOG) has lashed out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the crisis bedeviling the party ahead of the 2023 general election.

The COCGOG said it earlier saw PDP as an alternative after the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) “sealed its house” against Christians in the country, noting that the way the opposition party is handling Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and his team is sending a negative signal to the group.

It however said it would in a few days make its preferred presidential candidate for the 2023 presidency known.

The COCGOG made this known via a communique issued on Saturday by the group spokesperson, Pastor Emmanuel Yoeah, after its meeting held at Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja.

It would be recalled that Governor Wike and his allies, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), have since been calling for the resignation of the PDP National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu.

The aggrieved governors known as G5 have insisted that it is unfair for the main opposition party to have the national chairman and presidential candidate from the northern region of the country, saying Ayu should resign his position for justice, equity, and fairness in the PDP.

However, COCGOG, in a meeting held in collaboration with other Para-Church groups on Thursday, urged the PDP “to dialogue with Wike and his team before it is too late”, adding: “We saw PDP as an alternative because APC sealed its house against the Nigeria Christians already.

“Unfortunately, the way PDP is handling our leader and brother, Governor Wike and his team (Five Governors all Christians) is sending a negative signal to us, we can’t pretend anymore.

“Isaiah 61:8 ‘For I the LORD love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them,” it stated.

The group further resolved “to call a larger meeting in the next few days to take a definite position on our preferred candidate and to encourage each group to organise enlightenment programme, creating awareness ahead of the elections.”

It further condemned the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the ruling APC, saying it has generated tension in the country ahead of the next year’s election.

“In order to address the problems and concerns identified above, the participants with one voice call on all especially, the Nigerian leaders to:

“Intensify actions, cooperate, and synergise on restoration of true peace and security in the country.

“We are convinced that it is time for Nigerians unite and choose a leader with the capacity and capabilities to rebuild the broken unity, peace, and confidence among the citizens irrespective of religion, and ethnic affiliations.

“The Executives of the Coalition concluded that Nigeria is at a critical moment in the history of her existence as a nation and thus, critically needs urgent but in-depth multidimensional approaches in overhauling our value system in order to positively change the narrative. Hence, the emergency state of the nation calls for nothing less than a grand alliance of all persons of goodwill for justice and peace,” the COCGOG added.
