Gumel Emir Ahmed Sani II dies in Egypt

The long reign of the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, has come to an end following his death in Cairo, Egypt.

The Jigawa traditional ruler died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after serving as Emir of Gumel for almost 46 years.

His death was announced by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, who issued a condolence message in honour of the monarch.

Sani II became Emir of Gumel on December 16, 1980, and remained on the throne until his death.

Mourning the monarch, Pantami described him as a scholar, a wise leader and a father figure whose reign was marked by service to his people.

He said the late emir devoted his life to promoting peace and education while preserving the cultural values and traditions of the Gumel Emirate.

Pantami extended his condolences to the deceased monarch’s family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Jigawa State Government and the people of the state.

He prayed for the repose of the emir’s soul and asked God to grant his family and the people of Gumel and Jigawa the fortitude to bear the loss.
