Gunmen have killed a member of the union of commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada riders, in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

It was gathered that the man was shot dead in the early hours of Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

The middle-aged man, whose identity has yet to be ascertained, was shot dead in broad daylight by the gunmen around the popular Okesa roundabout in Ado-Ekiti.

It was learnt that the incident led to people around the ever-busy area to scamper for safety, as many hurriedly closed shops and offices for fear of reprisals by members of the Okada union.

He was said to have been shot, moments after he asked to know if the gunmen had obtained a ticket for the day.

Eyewitnesses said the deceased was one of the officers engaged in issuing tickets to commercial motorcyclists around Okesa roundabout.

One of the eyewitnesses said the killers immediately sped off upon realising that their plan had been successfully achieved.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Okada Riders’ Association in Ekiti State, Kunle Asaolu, said the deceased was one of those working with the association.

Also confirming the incident, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, said an investigation had begun to unravel the perpetrators of the act and their motives.

Abutu added that the corpse of the victim had been deposited at the morgue of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti.
