Three members of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service, Kadvis, have been killed by suspected armed attackers while carrying out a stop-and-search operation along the Zuntu-Zaria Road in Kubau Local Government Area.
The vigilantes were reportedly attacked around 12:20 a.m. on Monday while manning a checkpoint on the highway.
Sources in the area said trouble began when a red Gulf vehicle allegedly approached the checkpoint at high speed and failed to stop.
The Kadvis team reportedly gave chase in their patrol vehicle, leading to an exchange of gunfire with the occupants of the vehicle, who residents suspected were armed robbers.
During the pursuit, the driver of the patrol vehicle, identified as Mamiyo, the deputy commander of Kadvis in Kubau LGA, was shot.
A resident, Ibrahim Zuntu, said the bullet reportedly passed through Mamiyo’s ear.
According to him, the attackers later opened fire on another vigilante member inside the patrol vehicle before returning to the checkpoint.
“They returned to the checkpoint and met the other official who was left behind at the checkpoint and shot him too,” Ibrahim said.
He added that the incident occurred close to residential areas, with residents hearing the exchange of gunfire during the confrontation.
Another resident, Ali Zuntu, described the killings as devastating, saying the incident had left members of the community in shock.
In a separate attack in Kajuru Local Government Area, two residents of Maro village were reportedly killed by suspected bandits in the early hours of Monday.
The attackers also allegedly abducted three women and three children during the raid.
A resident, Ruben Maro, said the attack kept residents awake throughout the night as they attempted to repel the assailants.
He identified the deceased as Yonana Augustine and Ezekiel Dogara.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Kaduna State Police Command were unsuccessful as its spokesperson, DSP Mansur Hassan, could not be reached by telephone at the time of filing the report.
