Gunmen murder Lagos NURTW organising secretary

The Organising Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Ijaya, has died after he was shot by unidentified gunmen in Lagos.

Ajiboye was attacked on Sunday night while returning home from his childhood neighbourhood in Fadeyi. The assailants reportedly intercepted his vehicle along the Ikorodu Road corridor and opened fire, leaving the vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

Videos and photographs circulating on social media showed the white vehicle with multiple bullet impacts on the windscreen and other parts of the car.

Although initial reports indicated that Ajiboye and other occupants survived the attack after sustaining gunshot wounds, he was later confirmed to have died from his injuries.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye’s death as a painful loss.

In a tribute shared on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Adekunle said the deceased was a loyal ally, dependable friend and committed union leader whose contributions to the organisation would be greatly missed.

He said Ajiboye was not only the union’s organising secretary but also a trusted member of TeamSego and SegoNation, praising his loyalty, dedication and years of service to the union.

The NURTW chairman extended his condolences to Ajiboye’s family, friends and members of the union, praying for God to grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear the loss.

Police authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack, while the identities of the gunmen and the motive behind the killing remain unknown.
