The chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, has been shot by gunmen in Osogbo, the state capital.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Wednesday night in the MDS area of Osogbo.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, June 4, 2026, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said two gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on Ajibola in what the police spokesman described as an assassination attempt.
Ojelabi said the attack was reported at about 11:50 p.m., after which tactical and conventional units were immediately deployed to the scene.
Ojelabi said police officers evacuated the Accord Party chairman to a medical facility for urgent treatment, adding that he was later transferred to the University of Osun Teaching Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The police spokesman said medical personnel attending to Ajibola confirmed that he is in stable condition and responding well to treatment.

He added that an intensive manhunt has been launched to track down the assailants, who fled the scene after the shooting.
Ojelabi disclosed that police also recovered exhibits from the area, which he said were undergoing forensic examination as part of efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Ojelabi quoted the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, as condemning the attack and ordering a thorough investigation into the incident.
Ojelabi said the police commissioner had directed all relevant investigative units to deploy every available resource to uncover the circumstances surrounding the shooting and ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
He assured residents that the command remains committed to bringing the attackers to justice and urged members of the public to remain calm while providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
