A footballer has died after a trailer allegedly rammed into a Mercedes-Benz carrying members of a football academy before fleeing the scene of a crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident occurred on Monday around the Magboro axis of the expressway in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
Officials of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency and the police confirmed the death at the scene, describing the incident as a hit-and-run crash.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said the footballer and other members of his academy were travelling in two vehicles to a football match when the trailer allegedly struck the Mercedes-Benz C300, causing it to collide with a bus.
“We were going for a match. We just saw a trailer cross from the other side and hit this Benz, then it hit the bus. Only one person died in the car while the rest of us survived.

“Everyone in the bus is fine, too. The trailer driver fled with his vehicle afterwards,” the eyewitness said.
The footballer, whose identity had yet to be established as of the time of filing this report, was the only person reported dead in the Mercedes-Benz.
The vehicle, with registration number SMK-878KX, was badly crushed in the collision, while efforts were underway to remove its wreckage from the expressway.
