A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, in Kano State.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, said the suspect was apprehended by officers of its Armed Squad Unit on Sunday at about noon while allegedly trying to throw the substance into the facility.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.

He said the suspect, a resident of Janguza Quarters, was arrested following the vigilance and prompt response of the officers under the supervision of the Commander of the Armed Squad Unit, CSC Usman M. Sale.

The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism, describing their action as part of efforts to maintain security across custodial facilities.

He said the suspect had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.

The controller reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening security measures in its custodial centres to provide a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
