Armed hoodlums in Ipetumodu, Osun State, launched a midnight attack on detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), injuring several officers and a vigilante operative.
The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday as SCID operatives, led by Divisional Police Officer Johnson Olajonrin, moved in to arrest two key murder suspects whose case had been taken over by the department on July 21, 2015.
The assailants reportedly opened fire, wounding members of the team and vigilante Odewale Adepoju.
Police reinforcements were quickly deployed, forcing the attackers to flee.
A Toyota Camry with registration number KWL 906 Abuja was recovered from the scene.
The injured officers were treated and discharged from Amazing Grace Clinic, while Adepoju remains hospitalised.
Police say an investigation is underway to track down the perpetrators.
