I am ready to testify in Nnamdi Kanu’s trial based on one condition — Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reacted to reports that his name was included among witnesses listed to testify in the terrorism trial of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja, Wike expressed surprise over the development, saying he never volunteered to serve as a witness in the case currently before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“If you see Nnamdi Kanu, ask him why he listed me.

“I didn’t go to say I want to be a witness.

“So, if you see him, ask him why he listed Wike as one of his witnesses,” the minister said.

He explained that he had not received any official communication from the court regarding his appearance.

“You don’t become a witness by reading newspapers.

“Nobody has sent me any court process or subpoena,” Wike stated.

However, the minister clarified that he would honour the court’s invitation if formally summoned.

“If I am subpoenaed to come and give evidence, I must obey the court.

“I will appear — but not on the pages of newspapers,” he added.

Wike maintained that those who included his name on the list should be the ones to explain their reasons.

“He who listed me should answer that question.

“But if I’m invited, if I’m subpoenaed, don’t worry — I’ll be there,” he said.

Court documents show that Kanu has named 23 witnesses to testify in his defence.

The list reportedly includes prominent Nigerians such as former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd); Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; retired General Theophilus Danjuma; and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
