Afrobeats star Davido has addressed public criticism surrounding his recent comments on insecurity and injustice in Nigeria, distancing himself from claims of political alignment.
The singer, born David Adeleke, had earlier taken to the social media platform X to express frustration over the country’s situation, admitting that entertainers—including himself—have not done enough to speak out.
“I can’t lie, we entertainers… we dey mess up, including me. We need to speak up. It’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go,” he wrote.
His remarks drew mixed reactions online, with some users questioning his sincerity due to his perceived closeness to individuals linked to the presidency.
One user accused him of being performative, alleging that he belonged to a so-called “City Boys” group and was too close to Seyi Tinubu to openly criticise the government.
In response, Davido firmly denied any political affiliation, stating that he is not part of any such group.
“I no dey part of any City Boys group,” he wrote.
He also noted that he has previously faced backlash for criticising Nigeria’s leadership during interviews with international media.
“When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me,” he added.
Clarifying his relationship with Seyi Tinubu, Davido said their connection is purely personal and does not stop him from voicing concerns.
“I’ve been friends with ST for years and that’s where it stops. I call and complain to him all the time, even in person,” he explained.
