ICPC to arraign Kano-based journalist over ₦14m fraud

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to prosecute a Kano-based self-acclaimed journalist, Mr. Alkazim Kabir, also known as Abbati Kabiru Abuwa, for alleged fraud and impersonation amounting to ₦14 million.

In a statement signed by the Commission’s spokesperson, Demola Bakare, on Wednesday, ICPC said the decision followed multiple petitions accusing Kabir of serial fraud, false representation, and impersonation of high-ranking public officials.

According to the Commission, investigations revealed that Kabir had allegedly posed as aides to the President, Vice President, and members of the National Assembly to swindle unsuspecting victims.

In one particular case, he reportedly collected $3,300 and 1,620 Saudi Riyals from two individuals under the pretense of being a senior government aide.

Further findings indicated that Kabir often exploited religious travel arrangements to defraud victims.

During a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, he allegedly borrowed 11,000 Saudi Riyals from a fellow traveler and later sent a forged bank receipt as proof of repayment.

Similarly, the suspect was accused of issuing a fake ₦3.2 million transfer receipt to a travel agent who helped organize his flight, hotel, and train bookings.

The ICPC added that formal charges have been filed against Kabir, and he will be arraigned before a competent court once the case is assigned.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to bringing fraudsters and impersonators to justice, warning the public to be cautious of individuals who falsely present themselves as government officials or journalists to defraud others.
