The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has ordered the immediate suspension of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Drambi Vandi, the officer responsible for the killing of a lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, in Lagos State.

The IGP ordered the suspension of the ASP amidst the detailed report on the incident.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

The IGP noted that the recommendation for the suspension of the officer was in line with the internal disciplinary processes of the Force, adding that the suspension would create an enabling environment for necessary legal procedures to uphold justice in the case without interference.

“The suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer,” Baba added.

He further reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to the Rule of Law and assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to ensuring that justice is not just done but seen to have been manifestly done in the matter.

The IGP, therefore, appealed to the public to be calm, saying all hands were on deck to ensure justice prevails.

Baba equally stated that measures have been put in place to prevent future occurrences in the country.

The Star had reported that ASP Vandi, attached to Ajiwe Police Station in the Ajah area of Lagos State, allegedly shot and killed Raheem on Christmas Day.

It was gathered that the lawyer, her sister, and other family members were returning from an outing in their car when the police officer tried to stop them.

The woman was said to have tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the ASP allegedly shot at her vehicle and the bullet hit her.

The Lagos-based lawyer was rushed to a hospital where she was confirmed dead.
