Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to lead President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
Wike made the disclosure on Friday after inspecting the Phase Two works on the Kuje-Gwagwalada road dualisation project in Chikuku, Abuja.
The minister said preparations were already underway to establish campaign structures for Tinubu in the two territories.
“Very soon, I will inaugurate the campaign team for Tinubu in the FCT and Rivers State, which I will lead. All elements of the APC are ready, Mr President is ready, we are ready and you can see the enthusiasm,” Wike said.
He said supporters of Tinubu operating outside the All Progressives Congress had also begun organising for the 2027 election.
“The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), I believe, is putting itself together for an aggressive campaign. For us who are supporting Mr President from different political platforms, we have put our machinery ready to fully kickstart,” he added.
Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, has been publicly supporting Tinubu’s bid for another term while maintaining that he does not need to join the APC to mobilise support for the President.
His latest declaration comes amid reports of a separate campaign role being considered for him in the FCT and Rivers.
The proposed arrangement would be separate from the APC’s presidential campaign council, which has named former Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari as its Director-General.
Speaking on the impact of his administration’s infrastructure projects in the FCT, Wike said their completion would influence voters’ assessment of the government.
“This is governance, and this is what people expect. It will translate directly into actual votes,” he said.
He also rejected suggestions that any electoral outcome in the FCT could be attributed to manipulation, saying completed projects would provide the basis for the government’s support.
“It is very obvious. Nobody will be able to claim rigging in the FCT. The ‘rigging’ is the projects we are delivering, making the people happy,” Wike said.
The minister further expressed support for candidates aligned with the administration, including former FCT senator Philip Aduda and candidates seeking election to the territory’s two House of Representatives seats.
Wike also said funding would be made available to ensure the Kuje-Gwagwalada road project is completed by December.
