Imo varsity student stabs colleague to death

A 300-level student of Imo State University (IMSU), Francis Marvellous, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing to death a final-year student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Chinagorom Marvellous Kingsley, on the FUTO campus.

It was gathered that Francis, 21, stabbed the 22-year-old FUTO student during a heated argument with personnel of the university’s Man O’ War Unit on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

Confirming the incident on Friday, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye,  disclosed that Francis was arrested by police operatives on convoy patrol, who responded to a distress call from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of FUTO.

Okoye said the victim’s body was recovered and taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Owerri, where he was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary.

The police spokesman said: “During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, admitting that he had a heated argument with the Man O’ War Unit members and brought out a knife he concealed in his trousers, stabbing the victim to death.

“He mentioned three others who were with him during the fight, including his brother Francis Promise, Prince, and a man popularly known as Soji.”

Okoye noted that efforts were ongoing to arrest other suspects involved in the case, adding that the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take charge of the case.

He said the suspects would be arraigned in court upon the completion of an investigation.

The police spokesperson added: “The command has called on the general public, particularly the staff and students of FUTO, to go about their lawful business and has warned against taking the law into their own hands.

“The command also assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to prevent future occurrences.”
