Insecurity: Muftwang summons LG chairmen, security chiefs

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Wednesday convened an expanded State Security Council meeting with heads of security agencies and chairmen of all 17 local government areas, as the state grapples with a wave of attacks that have claimed at least 50 lives in the past week.

The meeting, held at Government House in Jos, reviewed the deteriorating security situation and mapped out strategies to halt further violence, according to the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.

Speaking after the session, Plateau State Police Commissioner Bassey Ewah announced that the existing curfew had been adjusted to run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with strict enforcement ordered. He warned that violators would face prosecution and confirmed that restrictions on commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations remain in force.

“His Excellency summoned this meeting to review the past week and enable us to plan effectively for the days ahead,” Ewah said, adding that the curfew adjustment had been communicated to all relevant agencies.

The police chief also dismissed reports of planned protests, insisting that law and order remains intact. “The government is not siding with any faith. All decisions are aimed at ensuring peace,” he said, urging residents to cooperate with security directives.

Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Plateau State, Hamisu Anani, said councils would tackle insecurity based on their individual peculiarities. “We are working closely with security chiefs, reviewing reports from the field, and strengthening collaboration to effectively tackle insecurity across the state,” he said.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo, Special Adviser on Security and Commander of Operation Rainbow, General Gagji Shipi, and the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Majesty Da. Jacob Gyang Buba.
