Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed an immediate and comprehensive boost to security across Abuja, with intensified surveillance at all border points connecting the capital to neighboring states.

In line with the directive, the newly activated Operation Sweep Squad—a joint task force comprising the Military, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies—has been deployed to strategic locations across the FCT.

Briefing the team on Tuesday, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, said the operation aims to foster seamless coordination among security agencies and deliver a decisive response to crime in the territory.

He noted that Minister Wike not only initiated the operation but also provided robust logistical support to ensure its success.

The operation has received full backing from Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police and will prioritize areas vulnerable to kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes, particularly as the yuletide season approaches.

“The FCT Minister has given full logistical support, including funds for fuel, vehicle maintenance, and allowances for personnel,” Dantawaye said, assuring residents of a visible and coordinated security presence.

Addressing concerns over the growing number of beggars in the city center, he stated that security agencies are collaborating with FCTA departments to tackle street begging.

Legal frameworks for the removal of beggars are being finalized, and anyone found loitering with suspected criminal intent will be profiled and removed from the streets.

“We are committed to profiling and removing individuals who disguise criminal activities under the guise of begging,” Dantawaye said.

The exercise will be conducted in partnership with Abuja’s environmental protection authorities once all legal requirements are met.
