IPOB declares May 30 sit-at-home for Biafra remembrance

The Indigenous People of Biafra has declared May 30, 2026, as a sit-at-home day across the South-East in honour of those it described as heroes and victims of the Biafran struggle.

In a statement issued by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the organisation said the date would be observed as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu.

The group described the annual event as a solemn period of reflection and remembrance for individuals who lost their lives during the Nigerian civil war between 1967 and 1970, as well as others allegedly affected in the years that followed.

According to IPOB, the remembrance is intended to honour those it claimed sacrificed their lives in defence of the Biafran cause and the survival of their people.

“What they defended was more than territory. They defended the right of a people to exist,” the statement said.

The group maintained that remembering those who died during the conflict and related incidents remained a moral responsibility and warned against allowing their sacrifices to fade from public consciousness.

As part of the observance, IPOB directed residents across what it described as Biafraland to observe a total sit-at-home on May 30 by suspending business, social and public activities.

It stated that the day should be devoted to prayer, reflection and quiet remembrance.

The organisation also called on political and community leaders in the region to recognise the significance of the date and honour those who died during the conflict.

Reaffirming its position, IPOB described May 30 as a symbolic date that represents the enduring memory of those lost during the Biafran struggle and its aftermath.
