‘It’s fake’: Military debunks viral video of Borno attack

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed a viral video circulating on social media that falsely claims to show a recent terrorist attack on military personnel in Marte, Borno State.

In a statement issued on Friday, May 16, 2025, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, clarified that the video is not related to the incident that occurred on May 12.

He explained that a detailed analysis confirmed the footage dates back to December 2020, and does not reflect the terrain, visuals, or context of the recent attack.

Kangye accused terrorist sympathisers and criminal elements of deliberately recycling old footage in an attempt to mislead the public and undermine military’s efforts.

He stated: “For clarity, troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) were attacked in Marte at about 3:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025.

“Our forces successfully repelled the assault after a fierce gun battle, neutralising a large number of terrorists while others fled with injuries.”

CDS to Nigerians: Don’t worry about terrorists’ attacks, we’re in control

He added that the outdated video was shared afterward as propaganda to create confusion and discredit the military.

“This misinformation is both malicious and a failed attempt to demoralize our courageous troops and weaken public confidence in the Armed Forces,” Kangye stressed.

Kangye condemned the spread of fake content, warning that those responsible for such disinformation would be identified and prosecuted under the law.

Kangye reaffirmed the military’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and continuing its progress in the fight against terrorism.

He urged citizens to ignore the fake video and rely solely on verified information from official sources.

Kangye added: “The support of Nigerians is essential in our collective fight against terrorism and insecurity.

“We urge everyone to spread this clarification and remain vigilant against misinformation.”
