The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to begin conducting the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027.

The proposed centre will enable eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit the examination without travelling to Nigeria solely for the UTME.

JAMB disclosed the plan on its official social media platforms following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.

The board said the initiative was part of its efforts to expand access to Nigerian tertiary education for citizens living abroad.

“The proposed centre will make it easier for Nigerians in the diaspora to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” JAMB said.

According to the board, the Ottawa centre will particularly benefit Nigerians seeking admission into universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

JAMB said the initiative would also strengthen the connection between Nigerians in the diaspora and the country’s education system while creating opportunities to promote Nigerian tertiary education internationally.

“For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” the board said.

It added that work was ongoing to establish the centre, which is expected to commence operations in 2027.

The board said the move would reduce barriers for Nigerians across North America seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions and provide them with greater access to the UTME.
