The lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has reacted to his expulsion from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), describing the decision as a “rude shock” taken without due process.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, Jibrin said the expulsion followed an interview he granted in English and Hausa, which he insisted was in line with the party’s founding principles of tolerance for dissenting views.
“No invitation was extended to me to defend or explain myself by any organ of the party, thereby neglecting the very important principle of fair hearing, due process and justice that the NNPP cry out loud and demand from others,” Jibrin said.
The lawmaker, who has been a prominent figure in the NNPP since joining the party ahead of the 2023 elections, maintained that he would have preferred to remain within the party despite differences.
However, he stressed that he accepts the party’s decision in good faith and would not pursue legal action against it.
“For the respect I have for the party, its members and leaders, I would have viewed this action as null and void as it failed to follow due process or came from a factional group of the party and tested it in court.
“I will rather wish the party well and go in peace,” he added.
On allegations of non-payment of dues, Jibrin clarified that he had never refused to pay and urged the party to send him an invoice so he could settle any outstanding obligations promptly.
He further appealed for decorum as both sides part ways, urging the NNPP to avoid “personal attacks or insults.”
The former NNPP chieftain also took a swipe at the party’s internal culture, alleging that the leadership failed to recognize the political value of its members.
“The party does not believe anybody has political value and comes short in treating people with the respect they deserve at various levels,” he said.
While expressing gratitude to his supporters, Jibrin hinted at weighing his options before announcing his next political move.
“I welcome all my supporters who wish to join me in my new journey.
“Finally, I will carefully weigh all the options before me as I decide on my next political home. So help me God,” he declared.
Jibrin’s exit marks another setback for the NNPP, which has been grappling with internal divisions in recent months.
