Jigawa: Between Gov Namadi and Persons with Disabilities

By ADAMU MUHD USMAN

“Every segment of our population and every individual have a right to expect from his government a fair deal”

—-U.S President, Harry S. Truma.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 through United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/3. and December 3rd is set aside every year to recognise and celebrate persons with disabilities globally.

The aim of the Day is to promote a deeper understanding of disability issues and to mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to raise awareness on the benefits of integrating persons with disabilities into all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.

In line with these objectives, and based on past developments in Jigawa State, wish to use this opportunity to call on the Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi (FCA), popularly known as Dan Modi, to continue demonstrating appreciation, concern, encouragement, sympathy and care towards physically challenged persons across the state.

Former Governor Sule Lamido (CON) had introduced a special package under which 100 physically challenged persons were selected from each of the 27 local government areas of the state and given a monthly security allowance (stipend). This improved their standard of living, reduced unemployment and helped to curb street begging. I understand that the present administration has revisited and improved this package. This is commendable, and we appeal to the Governor to sustain the tempo.

Because of the value placed on persons with disabilities, the Lamido administration also provided them opportunities to aspire and contest elective positions. At one point, a physically challenged candidate won a State Assembly seat from the Dutse Constituency. I therefore appeal to Governor Namadi to adopt and strengthen this inclusive strategy.

If such measures are already in place, we say well done. But if they are not, we appeal to Governor Dan Modi to appoint a dedicated aide to supervise matters relating to persons with disabilities and ensure they are given a true sense of belonging in the state.

Five critical matters for Jigawa Governor’s attention, by ADAMU MUHD USMAN

I also urge the Jigawa State Government to establish vocational training centres, such as weaving, knitting, dyeing and other skills, to empower physically challenged persons and improve their economic independence.

In addition, Jigawa State had enacted laws guaranteeing free medical care and free education from primary to tertiary levels for persons with disabilities. In essence, they are entitled to every privilege given to any indigene of the state, and in many cases, they are accorded priority attention. We appeal to the present administration to maintain and strengthen this important legacy.

If a man is endowed with a general mind, this is the best of nobility and truly, the heart is normally inclined towards the person who is most compassionate towards it.
